The cannabis seeds should be brown and small but a nice size and are often mottled. Small green seeds that are some times found in street deals are no good they take longer to germinate and make slow growing weak plants that yield little. Seeds with established strong genetics are expensive but well worth the investment as you can keep mother plants and take clones so you will never have to buy any seeds ever again if you are happy sticking with one strain. There is a 50% chance the seed will turn out female (only females produce buds).
Seed creation
Seeds are created when the pollen of a male cannabis plant (pic 1 below) lands on a pistil of a female cannabis plant (female pistons are the white hairs on the pic below on the right). Depending on how big the plant is females can create 100's of seeds per plant as it only take 1 grain of pollen and 1 set of 2 pistons per seed!. Note that when a female is pollinated potency is reduced as with yield because most of the plants energy goes into creating the seeds. Seeded plants must have 1-3 weeks extra flouring time to produce strong seeds finished seeds will often break out there shell and fall on the ground when done.
Germinating seeds.
Seeds need air, heat and water to germinate. When germinating seed's should be kept at around 70-90 Fahrenheit or 21-32 degrees Celsius and be kept in the dark. The seed should be planted into the growing medium when the tap root (white pre root see pic) is around 2Cm's long. Make a small hole in the soil about 8mm deep and carefully put the seed in tap root facing down and cover loosely but well. There are a few ways to germinate hear are 2-
The paper towel method is the most popular and has served me well. hears how to do it in steps.
1) get some toilet paper a few sheets thick.
2) wet the toilet paper so that it cannot absorb any more water (its very important it douse not dry up during germination as the seeds will dry out fast and die if cracked).
3) place seeds in between the sheets of paper and place in a warm dark place.
4) wait up to 10 days for the taproot to break throw and grow to about 2Cm's long.
5) plant seed about 8mm deep with the tap root going a little deeper into the grow medium.
6) cover the seed loosely but make sure its covered completely.
the seed shouldn't take longer than 4 days to break throw. Moisture and heat are key at this point thus the grow medium should be kept moist and the temperature 21-32 degrees Celsius.
The other method is potting the seed straight into the grow medium and giving it a heavy watering but as not all seeds will germinate it is better to go with the paper towel method.
Feminised seeds
Feminised seeds are 100% female and always produce buds however they are notorious for producing hermaphrodite's (see pic, plants that have both mail and female features) but with optimum care the risk is low. Feminised seeds are created when a hermaphrodite plant's pollen pollinates its self and other plants the seed's they then produce are "feminised" seeds. plants turn hermaphrodite when a plant is stressed (under watering, over watering, non consistent light ect).
